Staff Member Visits
RHA staff member Hilary Welter has new, global
perspectives on retailing after six months in Europe.
Welter is participating in Remote Year, a program
that allows her to work remotely while traveling and exploring
12 cities for a year with 75 other professionals from around
the world. Within her first six months, Welter traveled through
Europe and North Africa. In February she started the second half
of her trip, where she is venturing through South America.
In addition to working full-time as NRHA's member services
and communications coordinator, Welter has been exploring the
retail atmosphere along the way. In her blog, "NRHA Abroad,"
she's been sharing insights on international merchandising,
customer service and retail customs.
While she was stationed in Valencia, Spain, Welter visited with
retailers in Aix-en-Provence, France, and Stockholm, Sweden.

A Tour of Quincaillerie Aixoise
In January, Welter visited Quincaillerie Aixoise, the
largest independent home improvement retailer in Southern
France. During her visit, Welter met with company CEO
Jean-Francois Dubost and several of his staff. Welter toured
three of the company's five locations, which all mainly
cater to a professional clientele. According to Welter, some
of the most noteworthy aspects of Quincaillerie Aixoise
included the company's textiles department, successfully
executed store-within-a-store concept and the store's
high-end bathroom sister company, Question d'Ambiance.
