HARDWARE RETAILING | April 2017 8 Independent Thinking F or those who may be interested in attending the North American Retail Hardware Association's (NRHA) Retail Management Certification Program (RMCP), there are two new scholarships available. RMCP is a college-level educational program focused on developing the retail management skills of up-and-coming leaders in your business. This six-month management school includes business coaching and the planning and execution of a business improvement project designed to help young retailers think like business owners and entrepreneurs. So far, these business improvement projects have returned an estimated $6.5 million to participating companies. Sponsors of students overwhelmingly report a growth in business knowledge, retail management skills and confidence to lead among their graduates. The NRHA Board of Directors established two annual Marcus Moran Jr. Scholarships to recognize the contributions Marcus made in establishing RMCP. During his tenure as CEO of Aubuchon Hardware, Marcus saw the challenges our industry faces in attracting and retaining talent. He also recognized that we may already have employees with tremendous potential; people with ambition, intelligence and a love of the hardware industry, but who need basic training to reach their full potential. Marcus approached his trade association with the idea of creating the management school. But he didn't just present a great idea and then leave. Marcus committed to recruiting other independent retailers to design the program, loaning talent to establish the curriculum and sending students through the program. Today, Marcus and one of his key employees are still heavily involved as instructors. Using Your Trade Association as a Tool Many independent retailers spend too many resources developing programs on their own. It's important to remember that you and your fellow independent retailers make up your trade association. NRHA exists to bring independent retailers together to advance the industry, and that can be done more effectively through a collaborative effort. Your professional staff listens to your concerns and brings you together to develop programs you want. NRHA listens through its retailer board, market research, conferences, meetings and direct conversations with retailers like Marcus. Applying for the Marcus Moran Jr. Scholarships We will announce the first Marcus Moran Jr. scholarship recipients during the NRHA Young Retailer of the Year Program at the National Hardware Show ® in May.
