HARDWARE RETAILING | May 2017 16 M any retailers across the industry are saying the same thing about employment: "We need help finding the right people to work in our stores and eventually lead our businesses" and "When we find those with potential, what can we do to keep them engaged and help them grow?" The North American Retail Hardware Association (NRHA) launched its Retail Leadership Institute in 2013 to focus on helping retailers develop their employees. The newest program to come out of the Institute, NRHA's Foundations of Leadership Program, focuses specifically on developing leadership and personal development. The online program is designed to help prepare next-generation leaders, such as store managers and other employees with growth potential. NRHA created the program with the help of Ball State University, STIHL Inc. and a consortium of independent retailers, including Aubuchon Hardware, Buchheit, Friedman's Home Improvement, Foxworth-Galbraith, Jerry's Home Improvement, Sunshine Ace Hardware and Wilco Farm Stores. Improving leadership skills and performance starts with the student's learning style. This class is designed to help students discover their core identity and use it effectively when building and leading teams. The course covers topics that include: • Understanding Me • Understanding My Strengths • Leadership and Me • Problem-Solving • Constructive Conflict and Communication • Communication Skills • Developing Talent • Building a Team Retailers looking for a more robust program can have key employees participate in NRHA's Retail Management Certification Program (RMCP). This college-level, industry- focused course allows next-generation leaders to learn skills in all of the core areas of running a business, including operations, finance, marketing and more. As NRHA's initial program launched through the Institute, RMCP continues to grow and has resulted in more than 110 graduates and over $6.5 million combined return on investment for business owners. After students complete either program, they and their sponsors can continue developing leadership skills at NRHA's new annual conference. The NRHA STIHL Foundations of Leadership Conference invites students and business owners to a two-day event that will allow the group to explore concepts of leadership in an exciting, inspiring and highly interactive environment. Attendees will learn more about developing personal leadership skills, building stronger teams to fuel future growth for their businesses and much more.
