July 2017 | HARDWARE RETAILING 61 Matthew Payzant General Manager Payzant Home Hardware Building Centre Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia, Canada Multiple Store Operations W hile pursuing a career in wholesale food service after college, Matthew Payzant missed the customer interactions that come with retail. So, he constructed a plan on how his skill set could benefit the family business, Payzant Home Hardware Building Centre. Soon after, Payzant had his first job at the company working at the order desk of one of the company's five store locations. Today, Payzant is the head of merchandising, marketing and inventory. Payzant completed renovations to several store locations. He made considerable changes to the flagship store by incorporating old warehouse space into the existing retail area and building a 15,000-square-foot drive-thru warehouse facility. He's minimized dead inventory and overbuying by taking control of purchasing and inventory management and adjusting procedures to take advantage of the company's multi-store buying power. Payzant has significantly improved the employee onboarding process by creating new training policies and tools. He's also improved the customer experience by renovating stores and creating bathroom, window and door showrooms to make the spaces more appealing. One of his greatest passions is marketing, and Payzant has created his own successful flier and advertising program geared toward individual stores. He's also implemented merchandising standards to maintain expectations and build consistency. Payzant's hard work and business developments have contributed to a companywide sales increase of several million dollars. Additionally, Payzant values community giving. He and his team host events like parades, which helps reinforce the Home Hardware brand. The company also hosts tree plantings, birdhouse building contests and other events, in addition to donating materials to family-focused community projects. "Now we need to build excitement in our stores. We want to make sure that every day, we live up to our marketing."
