Trophies showcasing the success of the Dee's Dolls team are on display inside Umatilla Ace Hardware. "When Deloris retired, we changed the store layout to allow for more salesfloor space, and that opened a back area that had been storage for the antique store to now be used for the twirling studio," Jon says. Baton twirling is serious business for this family, with Deloris having attended the University of Tampa on a twirling scholarship. The original incarnation of the team was the Show Dolls, which combined with several other competitive twirling teams in the area, would eventually form into Dee's Dolls. Dee Ann began teaching twirling at a young age and the tradition has been passed down through the family, with her granddaughter recently beginning her training. Teams under Dee Ann's direction have won numerous titles, including some at the state level. Several students have gone on to become college majorettes. April-Ann Wilson, Dee Ann's daughter, also taught for the team. Dee's Dolls compete in area competitions as well as events like local parades. "It's a really great tradition in the family and something that sets our business apart from others," Jon says. The Dee's Dolls program also brings attention to Umatilla Ace Hardware with frequent visitors for classes and the unique nature of a retail hardware store also hosting a twirling team. "It's not something you see every day, but it really works out with the space opening up and how long the family has been involved in the sport," Jon says. "We look forward to being known for the team for a long time."
