Checkouts COMMUNITY RELATIONS Spread the Puppy Love M isty Gonzales was sitting in the veterinarian's office with her dog, Rascal, when she overheard a troubling conversation. Someone else in the waiting room was talking on the phone trying desperately to borrow enough money to pay for emergency medical pet care. The conversation stuck with Gonzales, who is manager of Willits Power & Hardware in Willits, California. A few months later, she, along with Melanie Grossman, the store's bookkeeper, founded Rascal's Rescue. Rascal's Rescue is a charity dedicated to helping those who need help paying their emergency pet care costs. "We work with vets who recommend people in need," Grossman says. "Last year we helped about a dozen animals." Grossman and Gonzales raise money in a variety of ways around the store, including donating the sales of Grossman's homemade, all-natural puppy treats, and special events. They also use some of the money raised by the charity to support local animal shelters. "Emergency pet care can be expensive, and many times it puts a financial strain on people," Grossman says. "We're helping give pets a second chance." Proceeds from the sale of homemade puppy treats, made by employee Melanie Grossman, go to fund Rascal's Rescue. HARDWARE RETAILING | February 2018 38
