Checkouts COMMUNITY RELATIONS Give It a Twirl H ardware stores are usually known for certain aesthetics. Whether it's the familiar sight of the hardline items you expect or a local contractor running in for a crucial pickup, these things are to be expected when walking into stores like Umatilla Ace Hardware in Umatilla, Florida. But a sight you might not expect to see might be the bright colors and fluffy ruffles of the leotards and batons belonging to the members of Dee's Dolls, a twirling studio run out of Umatilla Ace Hardware by co-owner Dee Ann Wilson. Other owners include Chuck Wilson (Dee Ann's husband), Roy Carter, Deloris Carter and Cade Carter. While Dee's Dolls has existed for many years going back through Dee Ann's family, the space for the studio opened up about a year ago when the business reallocated space, says store manager Jon Wilson. It also isn't the first unique twist Umatilla Ace Hardware has taken on its business model. Deloris Carter, Dee Ann's mother, had run an antique shop inside Umatilla Ace Hardware for many years, Jon says. The shop was separated from the main salesfloor by a partition wall. Dee Ann Wilson leads two nieces and a granddaughter in twirling practice at their facility inside Umatilla Ace Hardware.
